Physiotherapy Placements in Mexico

Physiotherapy Placements in Mexico

Our physiotherapy projects in Mexico are based at an orphanage for children with conditions such as cerebral palsy and autism in Guadalajara. We also have placements in Puerto Vallarta with a local NGO that was started by the parents of disabled children.

There is very little provision of physiotherapy treatment for disabled children in Mexico. The treatment that is available is expensive and beyond the reach of most of the parents whose children required daily treatment. As a result, many children are abandoned into the care system.

Daily physiotherapy is essential to these children, without it, their conditions degenerate rapidly. This is where you can help.

This placement is ideal for both pre-university and current / elective physiotherapy students. Those at the pre-university stage can help the children as they go through their daily exercise and massage therapies. The children have both neurological and physical conditions and require daily treatment and therapy. Some of the parents work during the day and so don’t always have the opportunity to accompany the children through their therapies. You can assist with the treatments and provide a reassuring presence as quite often the treatments can be painful and traumatic for the children.

Those with more experience, for example if you are looking for something for a physiotherapy elective, can be more hands on and also help design treatment programmes for the children.

Usually, you will start your first week by completing an induction course covering the work of the clinic and the basic procedures and workshops that you will be asked to assist with. The clinic runs a number of workshops which are tailored to the injury or disability and you will be helping in a variety of these. Although physiotherapy makes up the bulk of the workshops, you will also be asked to help with language therapy, massage and feeding the disabled patients.

Although all our projects in Mexico include a basic Spanish course, it is useful if you have at least some basic Spanish before joining the medical project in Mexico. If you have no Spanish or are not confident that your Spanish is quite up to scratch we would recommend combining programmes and joining a teaching or orphanage project first. Alternatively, we are happy to recommend a good one week Spanish course.
