Nursing Placements in India

Our medical and nursing placements in India are based at large multi-specialty hospitals, a primary healthcare centre and a number of smaller specialist clinics in and around Trivandrum in the beautiful state of Kerala. We have chosen these hospitals because they give you the opportunity to spend time in a variety of different departments and gain experience in a number of nursing fields. Some of the larger hospitals are nursing colleges which gives Pre-university nursing students an opportunity to attend lectures and practical sessions with Indian students (during Indian terms times) and elective students the opportunity to be supervised by academics.

Like most countries in the world, you have to pay for medical care in India. This means that many people don’t take themselves to the doctor until their condition becomes so bad that something must be done, sadly it’s often too late. Additionally, the unique social hierarchy in India means that many people who are lower down on the social ladder (the caste system) feel uncomfortable visiting the doctors. This means that during your time with us in India you will see highly advanced medical conditions that you are unlikely to ever see at home.

Adult Nursing / General Nursing / Paediatric Nursing

If you are interested in adult or general nursing experience, you will usually be placed at one of the larger hospitals to give you the opportunity to see the widest range of conditions. These hospitals allow you to specialise in a particular area of nursing or gain experience on a number of different wards. In addition to time in larger hospitals, previous participants on this programme have also been placed in rural communities for part of their time to gain additional experience in community nursing.

Those interested in paediatric nursing can work on children’s wards, the paediatric ICU and / or paediatric nursing in a community setting.

Midwifery

If you are looking for an elective in midwifery, we can place you in one of the larger district hospital maternity or OBG departments or one of the smaller district or specialist womens clinics.

Mental Health Nursing

All 3rd year BSc Nursing students at the nursing college in Trivandrum spend time gaining clinical experience at the Mental Health Unit so those looking to gain experience in Mental Health Nursing can join the students as they attend this placement.

The placement can be tailored to your objectives or you can follow the programme that the Indian nursing students follow which includes gathering care histories of psychiatric patients, performing mental health assessments, planning, implementing and evaluating occupational therapy needs, and delivering supportive psychotherapy for the patients and their families.
